This is a beautiful piece of history. Probably used to communicate between floors to the butler or downstairs staff. A lovely piece of furniture to blend in with the opulence of the household this would have been used in. This was probably the one used in the households part of the house and the servants one would have been much less regal and used downstairs in the servants quarters. How these things survive is beyond me but it has obviously been stored somewhere safe from the ravages of time. Over one hundred years old. I have done some light maintenance to the woodwork and metal parts with some wood wax and cleaning. It is un-restored and and so has some pitting in the metal parts. Note the beautiful Tortoise shell mouth piece which thankfully was made from an early resin material. It is a statement piece of furniture and excuse the pun but a fabulous talking piece. Not working and for ornamental use now. Would look great in a restored Edwardian house in the Library etc. Will probably go to a prop company and so look out for it in some future films or period dramas. Has a brass knob missing from one bell top.
